Wandsworth Councillor
In May 2006 Lucy was elected as a councillor for Southfields Ward Wandsworth Borough Council, beating the Liberal Democrats into second place. Following the election, Lucy was appointed to the following Council committees:
As well as being deputy chairman of the Children & Young People's Services, Lucy is the Chairman of Wandsworth's Pupil Referral Unit Advisory Board. She has been able to see first hand the work the Council is doing to support the most vulnerable and to provide opportunities for a better future for disadvantaged young people: teenage mothers and children excluded from school. In helping young people help themselves and giving them a second chance Council services benefit the community as a whole.
Lucy has a particular focus on issues which which impact on the everyday life of residents; local environment issues, (noise, traffic and irresponsible dog ownership); also antisocial behaviour and street crime. Lucy has campaigned on promoting safety and security in our parks and open spaces and increasing police presence.
She is currently working on ways of reducing antisocial behaviour by giving young people a sense of shared responsibility for the local community and through promoting structured activities outside school hours.
She has been working with London Buses for an improved bus service on route 156 to ensure that local businesses and residents do experience disruption and antisocial behaviour from large numbers of school children congregating at bus stops and unable to get home at the end of the day. Lucy is also a member of the Wandsworth Town Partnership Board, which is considering the major redevelopment of heart of Wandsworth and its impact on the South Circular.
